In this video, Colm Toibin, guest editor of the Spring 2011 issue of Ploughshares, describes what the unique guest-editing process was like for him. He mentions that the experience was like building; he started with established authors and moved on to search for the varying kinds of “something” that make a piece of writing work. That search proves difficult, he says: “It’s really impossible to say what sort of pieces work and what don’t.” Amongst other things, Toibin talks poetically about authors he admires, where we store potential “somethings” for stories, and not knowing how Ploughshares worked at first.

Toibin visited Emerson last week, April 7th to launch the new issue and do a Q & A and Reading of his own work. The full livestream of the event can be found here.
