We’re excited to announce the release of our latest solo, “The Critic” by Tim Parrish!
Tim Parrish’s “The Critic” is a slightly surrealist account of the fraught, yet creative relationship cultivated between artists and critics. We meet a music critic who has devoted his entire life to covering the career of an elusive, Bob Dylan-esque musician referred to as “The Twerp.” But as the critic begins to hear The Twerp’s voice everywhere, we learn his vocation may have turned the corner into obsession.
Here’s an excerpt from the Solo:
He sits up, or maybe he is lying down, it’s hard to tell, letting the sound of the sound wash over him. A record has been spinning for hours but for now its motion has been stilled. He rests as still as possible in his room where no laptops or iPods or iPads or loaded iPhones exist to torture him. He is listening, intently, to that lost sound he has learned to cherish, which is the silence between sides. He listens, he luxuriates, he experiences the living vibrations of all that had been given him to know that had not been given to Aristotle, Horace, or Longinus. Think of it! Coleridge, Arnold, even Thomas Stearns Eliot (the Little E he called him to distinguish him from The Big E) had never had occasion to remark upon the poetry of Chuck Berry or describe the grain of Little Richard’s voice. He should thank the lucky stars he was born when he was born.
