On Writing “Visit #1,” by Afaa Michael Weaver

Afaa Michael Weaver’s poem, “Visit #1,” appears in our Winter 2012/13 issue, edited by Ladette Randolph and John Skoyles.

“Visit #1” is a result of a concern I had for my son who, at one point, struggled with issues that are prevalent in black urban communities where laws that are often unconstitutional are passed for relatively minor offenses in order to increase prison populations.  As someone who has survived the challenges of black urban life, I am a member of a minority within a marginalized group, and so I hope to show that innate goodness of black men who are often otherwise perceived by outsiders. As parents these young and not so young men are our children.
