Check out this video montage of former guest-editor Seamus Heaney reading his poem “Digging.”
Seamus Heaney was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995, and has published numerous volumes of poetry, criticism, and translation. Heaney has been a resident of Dublin since 1976, but since 1981 he has spent part of each year teaching at Harvard University, where in 1984 he was elected the Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory.
Heaney was the guest editor of the Spring 1980 issue and the Spring 1984 poetry issue. In the introduction to the poetry issue, Heaney says, “The last time I edited Ploughshares I knew all the contributors personally and solicited work from them. This time, the opposite is almost literally true: I deliberately set myself the task of confronting what came unsolicited to the magazine and was more on the lookout for work that promised than for names that clicked.”
